Scott Witherden

Scott joined Nuna CC as a 12 year old in 1973 when the Club was still located at Silver Grove Nunawading, our original home. He was school friends with several boys who were also playing at Nuna in those times, many of whom played long and distinguished careers.

Scott played 4 junior seasons and was at the Club when we moved to Mahoneys Reserve in 1975 and then moved into the seniors in 1978-79. He quickly moved up the grades as a medium pace in-swing bowler and spent most of his formative years in the Second XI, although he has played in every grade at Nuna, from the First XI to the Eighth XI. He was a great ‘death’ bowler and was often relied upon to get wickets or keep runs down at critical stages.

Scott was, and still is, a reliable batsman, initially a middle-lower order bowling all-rounder but, more recently he has changed from a bowling all-rounder to a batting all-rounder.

In addition to around 50 games in our juniors, in two stints, 1979 to 2001 and 2017 till -now, Scott has played 237 senior games, totaling close to 300 games for Nuna. He has made over 4500 runs @ 22 including 13 50s and 5 centuries with a top score of 168 and taken 350 wickets @ 17 and 7 five-wicket hauls. Prior to focusing on raising his 3 daughters, Scott did not miss a game for 17 seasons. His personal highlight is batting all day in a second XI Grand Final in 1986-87 with his mentor, Col James. Scott made 87 and we won the premiership after being 7 for not many. The following season, 87-88, Scott won the First XI bowling averages.

Scott has also served the club off the field. He was on the committee for many years in the 80s and 90s and filled the role of Assistant Secretary and Club Delegate for several years. He coached junior teams and was always around to assist whenever a hand was needed at any time.

Fast forward to 2017 when Scott returned to the Club. Despite his love for the Club, Scott has 3 autistic daughters and they required his full attention. Now older and more independent, Scott was able to return to his club and resume pretty much where he left off. He has been Assistant Coach of the Under 18s and Under 16s in recent seasons as well as resuming his spot on the committee, in the same roles he had before. Leading into season 21-22, Scott is Chairman of Selectors and Practice Captain as well as delegate and, again, always there to help. He is also well known for driving his mates home after they have had a few drinks which is very selfless.

Scott has been part of our club for almost 50 years and it is appropriate that he is recognized with Life Membership.
