Nunawading Cricket Club Winter Log

Welcome to the Nunawading Cricket Club Winter Log for Season 2022-23. The Log started circulating in the late 50s was written by scribes sitting on a log next to the cricket oval at Silver Grove, the original home of our club. This is now a recreation centre behind the Nunawading train station. Nuna moved to Mahoneys Reserve in 1975.

The intent is to provide an easy to read and engaging update of news and events at Nunawading Cricket Club.

Hi Everyone,

Well it is pretty cold outside isn’t it and summer cant come fast enough. Lots of work has been underway in the off season and here are the highlights.

The Club and BHRDCA Annual General Meetings have recently been held the BHRDCA fielding a generally unchanged committee. Again we thank Lynda Richardson who has agreed to continue as BHRDCA Treasurer for a fourth season. At Nuna there have been a few committee changes. After around 30 years, Max and Paddy and stepping from behind the bar to in front of it with John Kennett replacing them. They are not going anywhere and we are enormously thankful for the huge sacrifices in time and effort over such a long time. We plan to run a bar roster and John will reach out for help. Rob Nash has re-joined the Committee as Social Secretary and, COVID notwithstanding, we are planning to run functions such as the popular Trivia Night, some food theme nights, a Sportsman’s Night and Past Players Day, celebrating our 95th anniversary.

Rob Ferdinands, who has lead the club so well on the field for the last 5 seasons, has stepped down as Coach. Rob’s commitment and personal sacrifices in time and effort were immense and he has left us in a good place re our on-field competitiveness and the improvements in the way we train. Rob is also not going anywhere and has joined the Committee as Vice-President with plans to take over from me soon. He will also coach one of our girls teams and will play a role in supporting our new Ladies cricket program.

Unfortunately. Club Captain, Darren Hill, has moved to Geelong for work and will play cricket there but he is not lost to the Club as he will still captain the 20-20 team on Tuesday nights. We hope Darren will return to Saturday cricket with us as soon as he can.

I have 2 major announcement to make,

Damien Yze joins the Club as Senior Coach

Damien (Ooze) Yze is a legend of the BHRDCA and a very accomplished top order batsmen. He has played most of his career at East Box Hill and has played in multiple Shield Premierships, made many hundreds and won several batting averages. This is fantastic news for the Club and you will read Damien’s introductory notes later on. He has just completed his Cricket Australia Level 2 coaching accreditation which is great.

Social Sixes Ladies Cricket

The Club is pleased to announce the start of our Ladies Cricket program with a ‘Social Sixes’ initiative. The concept is a series of fun and fitness oriented activities for ladies and girls with a cricket theme. No experience is necessary and coaching will be provided by Cricket Victoria and Nuna coaches. We will run a zoom call on Wednesday August 10, attended by Cricket Victoria, to introduce the program and a come-and-try session on Saturday Sept 11. The sessions will run on Mondays from 5:45 pm and are at no cost including all equipment provided by the Club. If you would like to know more, please email socialsixers@nunawadingcc.com

Next Season:
All going well, 2-day cricket will return next season with grades of 8 teams playing each other in one and two-day games. We will gauge interest from players shortly re preferences for 1 or 2 day cricket. Our plan, at present, is to field 5 senior teams again and a similar team structure to previous seasons with teams from Under 18 all the way down to Woolworths Junior Blasters including 2 girls teams.

New Pavilion and Social Rooms:
We are working with Whitehorse Council and other key stakeholders, principally the Nunawading City Football Club, on plans for a new pavilion. Priorities for us are to preserve the nature of our social rooms, womens and girls changing facilities, to have an elevated view onto ovals 1 and 2 and an upstairs and downstairs kitchen/bar. We are at the start of the journey with construction still a year or more away. If you have a view on this, please contact Rob or I.

Finally, our key sponsors are below, if you can support them it would be great:

CP Insurance Services
Corsec Services
Bendigo Bank Blackburn South
Piccolino Pizza
MPrint
Ecolab

I look forward to seeing you all soon and encourage you to think of contributions you can make to the club to make it a better place for all both on and off the field.

Yours in cricket
